At our 2nd Annual Wheels for Women Celebration, another one of our car recipients, Destiny, shared how reliable transportation has impacted her life.
For Destiny, having a dependable vehicle means more than getting from place to place. It means getting to work consistently and on time, creating stability for herself and her child, reducing stress, increasing safety, and opening the door to new opportunities for the future.
Stories like Destiny’s are why this mission matters so much.

Brittany's Story
On March 9th, 2024, my life changed forever! At Meritus Hospital in Hagerstown waiting for my results of why I feel like I got ran over by a vehicle. The nurse told me “Mrs. McCray your ultrasound results took a really long time because we found two embryos; YOU’RE HAVING TWINS!!” Shock of my life! In that very moment I knew God had the reigns of what turned out to be the most beautiful and amazing journey.
I love school and college and I am very good at researching and figuring out challenging situations. At the very beginning of my pregnancy, my mom took me to my first two appointments and other places I needed to go since I was without a vehicle. I’m very grateful because she lives about an hour and 20 minutes away from me. I knew my appointments were going to start getting closer together so through researching, I knew to call 211 and my health insurance company. The information that I received from these two sources moved mountains for me. Rabbit Transit was a tremendous help with getting me to my appointments. Lyft was another useful company I used to get everywhere else. I know they are expensive but I was blessed for these options.
Going through all of this definitely made me strong. Not having transportation for about a year and a few months then abruptly getting a phone call from Wheels for Women on October 29th telling me that I have transportation now was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.
God is always listening and he’s always with us! You have to walk by FAITH not by SIGHT ![]()
Week One Brittany's Story
Getting ready to give birth
During the beginning of my pregnancy, I had a lot to get used to. I had double appointments every other week from my second trimester and on. This was on top of my part time job and taking care of my household. I also engaged in two home programs every other week. I am grateful to my dad because he was a huge part of helping me through my pregnancy. Lyft was available for me so I worked and my job wasn’t too far so the expense was not bad.
When it was time for the babies to be born, it was super abrupt. I went in for my 34th week ultrasound at Maternal Fetal Medicine and sure enough afterwards my doctor comes in and tells me “Get prepared Brittany, you have preeclampsia and your son’s amniotic fluid is decreasing. You have to deliver ASAP.” I started to panic but my mind started to put things in order. I called my dad and figured out a way to get over to Chambersburg Hospital.
God works so beautifully! I did not know the road ahead but what I did know was “I LOVED JESUS” and he has gotten me through some extremely tough times. My favorite verse that keeps me going everyday is Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble”. I was surrounded by the Bible; a client that I took care of was Brethren and my dad was Baptist. He read his Bible and we would have a lot of discussions daily on faith. I was truly blessed for these beautiful babies and the strength God provided through my incredible journey.”
The babies were born on September 25, 2024. Next week, we’ll hear about the details of their first weeks of life!
Week Two Brittany's Story
Two weeks before delivery of babies Gabriel and Gianna (“Gigi”), I got an unexpected phone call but now looking back that phone call meant everything. UPMC Family Partnership called and offered me a home nurse. Mrs. Jasmina was heaven sent. Three days after bringing Gabriel home (on September 28, 2024), she came for a home visit. Towards the end of the appointment she was finishing up the health assessment and she notices Gabe was very cold and he was breathing slowly. Those trembling thoughts, the words “NICU” even “hospital” made me cry and the feeling of being defeated. In this moment, I knew I had to stay even stronger.
On Oct. 23rd, 2024, we were in Chambersburg Hospital on the pediatric floor. This was very hard to imagine being back in the hospital again. But I had to stay strong for my babies and myself. On Oct. 29th my WORLD SHOOK, when I woke up this morning I sat on the edge of the hospital bed and prayed for comfort with medical decisions. “You walk by faith not by sight” kept running through my head. Later that afternoon, Gianna was throwing up her formula and breastmilk. Luckily I as able to get her in to see the doctor. After her appointment I turned the hallway corner and saw 10 to 15 medical staff including security guards and aviation workers. I was carrying Gianna and when I saw this I ran down the hallway because I wasn’t sure what to think. When I got to the room they told me he was being Life flighted. The terrifying part about the situation was I had to say goodbye for now to my baby boy
. He had tubes everywhere to keep him safe, I prayed right with him and I said “Mama is coming, baby. Don’t worry!” I packed the room in 10 minutes with the nurses’ help and Gigi and Mama were off to see Gabriel! Thanks to the help of my great friends Jen and her dad Ken!!
[Brittany had not yet received her vehicle at this point so was depending on family, friends and church friends to get her back and forth from her home in Greencastle (with baby Gianna in tow) to the NICU an hour away. Next week we’ll read about both babies coming home and the new family settling into a semblance of a routine!]
***Brittany’s twins shortly after birth. Gianna was born at 7:09 am on 9/25/24 and was 4 lbs., 9 oz and 18″ long. Gabriel was born at 7:10 am and was 3 lbs, 0.8 oz and 15-3/4 inches long.
Week Three Brittany's Story
Brittany McCray is sharing her story of how having reliable transportation made a huge difference for her new family at a critical time when she really need it. Here is the third of four installments in her story:
“October 29th, 2024, was a very hectic morning. As I looked out the window from the Chambersburg hospital on the pediatric floor I got this feeling that it was going to be a very challenging day. My daughter was throwing up formula and breast milk that morning, and my son had to get his feeding tube back. While all this was happening, I looked out at the nurses’ desk and yelped “Please, I need help! I’m overwhelmed!” The nurse came in and sat next to me and we did some deep breathing exercises. I prayed heavy for God to take the reins. She suggested I make an appointment with Pediatrics about Gianna.
The next day, upon arrival to Hershey, Pennsylvania, the babies were in their third hospital. Getting the text message that day from my UPMC Nurse about the car was a relief. (Brittany received the confirmation that Wheels for Women would be awarding her a car shortly). I knew that I would have proper transportation to bring my babies home. The words “HOPE” and “STRENGTH” I replayed in my mind constantly. God knew that I was able to handle all of this. The verse that helped me the most was “do not yield to fear for I am always near, never turn your gaze from me. For I am your faithful god. I will infuse you with my strength and help you in every situation. I will hold you firmly with my victorious right hand.” All I needed to keep going every day was God, my baby’s and my strength!”
Editor’s Note: On November 6th, 2024, Brittany received her 2013 Ford Escape. The babies were discharged for the final time from Hershey Medical Center on November 10th to their new home in State Line, PA without needing to rely on someone else for a ride!
Week Four Brittany's Story
Wow, as I reflected on this amazing, beautiful, but challenging journey. It has made me appreciate what God really had in store for me! Praying, being patient and strong kept me going mentally and physically. Wheels for Women changed my life! God put the vehicle in my life at the right moment. Advice I will give not only as a strong mother but as a thirty year old woman that has overcome many obstacles “PRAYER IS POWER” and one of my versus that I keep close to my heart everyday is “His Massive Arms are wrapped around you, protecting you. You can run under his covering of majesty and hide, his arms of faithfulness are a shield keeping you from harm(Psalm 91:4). Keep God so close and never stop believing in yourself and prayer ❤️
This organization has changed so many lives!! That moment when you are standing in your living room crying, because you have to make the final decision to furnish your twins room or focus on a vehicle because I couldn’t afford to do both. It just made it so much more heartfelt and special that all of the prayers were beautifully answered. I got that breath of fresh air news! These are the type of people and organizations we have to keep supporting. I was so grateful that I didn’t have to worry about getting anywhere anymore. All necessary places that we needed to go to are taking care of! I will always shout out my ENDLESS PRAISE to Wheels for Women. From the bottom of my heart thank you to WHEELS FOR WOMEN for getting my car ready just in time to bring both babies HOME FOR GOOD! ❤️🙏
